Major Chord
A major chord consists of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the scale. For instance, in the key of G, the notes G, B, and D are to be played. As long as your fingers reach each note comfortably it is permissible to play them. But remember it is not limited to one octave that you must play, the notes in the other octave can be played to form the chord. See illustration below:
Minor Chord
Minor chords are formed by moving the 3rd note (10th note also) of the major scale half-step down - that will be moving one fret lower.
D, F#, A are the respective 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the D major scale. See how F# (3rd note) moved one fret lower.
